To the moon! Scientists successfully grow plants in lunar soil
Research makes lunar agricultural planting for food more real.
Scientists have made a breakthrough in understanding the properties of lunar soil by growing plants in it for the first time. For the experiment was used lunar soil collected by NASA's Apollo astronauts.
Researchers had no idea if anything would sprout in the harsh moon dirt and wanted to see if it could be used to grow food by the next generation of lunar explorers. The results surprised them: the plants can be really grown in lunar soil.
However, this turned out to be a difficult task. Radioactive and coarse lunar soil did not have the most favorable effect on plants - they grew weak and smaller than in the similar Earth soil, AP reports.
